Because we are budget friendly
- Island Acres Resort Motel boasts 17 kitchens. Dine at "home" even while on vacation. This allows you will spend less money on dining out, and to spend those dollars on special dining experiences. You will also have more flexibility and be able to accommodate family members with food allergies.
- Traveling with kids? Spend an evening star gazing. Have a game day with prizes. Have family select favorite recipes or choose a theme for meal planning.
- Got pets? Rather than boarding your best friends, bring them along.
- With the vast amount of public lands in Gunnison County, we challenge you to run out of free things to do.
- Take advantage of a trip to a national or state park. Rates are inexpensive and there is a lot to do. In less than one hour, you can be at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. $15 will get everyone in your vehicle a three-day pass (2011 rates).
Because we are "Green", Promoting Sustainable Tourism and an Environmentally Friendly Tourism Industry
Green Seal, an organization that certifies the environmental practices of a variety of businesses, found an average 150-room hotel consumes in one week as much as 100 four-person households do in one year.
- We preserved historic buildings, which keeps building materials out of landfills and avoids the consumption of new building supplies
- We incorporate, wherever possible, energy saving and environmentally aware practices
- By changing our behavior and consumption habits to lessen our carbon footprint and sustaining our local environment through careful and thoughtful property management
- We use recycled items in furnishing, equipment and restoration
- Rather than consuming the energy necessary to keep our buildings heated during Gunnison's cold winters, which is also when occupancy can dip to from 10% to 40%, we have elected to install features that allow us to close our business during this time.
- Through careful and non-traditional property management, we are able to keep our energy usage at about one-fourth of most hotels.
- Land useage is designed around preserving the trees, some that are over 100 years old, which provide us with a great deal of cooling shade in the summer.
- Flooring is being replaced with environmental friendly materials.
- For our friends who have boats and who make multiple trips to Gunnison, we encourage the “skipper” to leave his or her boat with us free of charge rather than hauling it over the mountain again. While this is certainly environmentally friendly, it is also friendly to the guest’s pocketbook at the gas pumps.
- Old furnishings are donated to low-income families with the help of the local food bank organization.
- Our recent office remodel used almost all recycled materials, as did the "new" porch on the front of the twenties building, which used recycled building materials..
- Our home/office is heated using a pellet stove.
- Rather than sending broken trees limbs and pruned branches to the landfill, all is stacked for firewood for guests' use.
